My relationship with Karlheinz Stockhausen’s INORI (1974) began while researching my doctoral dissertation. I returned to the work after completing my degree, undertaking an over two-year process of learning its highly detailed gestural score. In 2022, I studied the piece with Kathinka Pasveer and Alain Louafi at the Stockhausen Summer Courses in Kürten, Germany.

INORI has become a significant part of my artistic practice, bringing together my interests in music, movement, and the relationship between physical gesture and sound. The extended process of learning the work required a different kind of musical engagement, one in which the body itself becomes the primary means of articulating musical structure.

In 2023, I presented the U.S. and Brazilian premieres of INORI as part of a series of performances across both countries. I remain one of a small number of performers who have learned and performed the work.
